Trident Ploughshares have called a month long blockade of AWE Burghfield (where the next generation of Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons are already being built) and Yorkshire will be joining the blockade on the 9th of June. The idea of the blockade is to keep attention on the issue of Trident in the runup to the parliamentary vote on Trident replacement.
It will be the fourth blockade YCND have been involved in over the last two years, each time gaining media attention in the local press both in Yorkshire and Berkshire (where the weapons factory is located). If you’ve not taken part in ‘Non-violent Direct Action’ (NVDA) before, trying to shutdown a nuclear weapons factory can sound a bit daunting, for that reason we’ll be holding a training session in Bradford at 4.30pm on Sunday 5th of June for people interested in finding out more – contact us to book on.
All the blockades YCND has attended of late have been very positive with no arrests, but there are also a whole range of supporting roles needed on the day for those who can’t risk arrest.
This is a video of the Burghfield blockade in May last year.
