On the 13th January, Leeds City Council became the first City Council in Yorkshire to pledging its support for the 2017 UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

To mark this achievement, a tree was planted in Park Square.

As a nuclear-free zone for over forty years, Leeds has a great history as a city of peace, and it was only a matter of time and persistent grassroots campaigning before it joined the growing list of global cities backing the 2017 UN Treaty, which now numbers in the hundreds from Manchester to Munich, Sydney to San Francisco.

Bradford CND are calling on Bradford Metropolitan Borough Council to follow the lead set by Leeds City Council last week and declare support for the ban.

As of January 2026, we currently have the support of over 30 councillors. We are still campaiging for a motion to be passed at a council meeting and for local MPs to sign the pledge too.

Did you know that Sheffield has been a member authority of Mayors for Peace since July 1989 and has a longstanding of history of peacework, which includes the peace march in 1936?

Sheffield was also the target city for a nuclear attack in the 1984 BBC television film ‘Threads’. The film graphically outlines the short term and long term impact on the city’s residents.

3 MPs (Lousie Haigh, Olivia Blake & Abtisam Mohamed) have already signed the TPNW pledge. We also have the support of 14 councillors (and counting!).
