Think Globally, Act Locally – your council and the TPNW

While the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) continues to gather pace, with 69 signatory countries to date, progress in nuclear armed states (such as the UK) requires a more staged approach. In addition to the Parliamentary Pledge encouraging MPs to support the ban, last month ICAN launched the Cities Appeal for local towns and cities to show support.

The appeal builds on the success of groups such as Back from the Brink and Nuclear Ban US in getting US cities (Los Angeles, Baltimore) and states (California) to pass resolutions supporting the ban as well as similar moves in Canada and Australia. Last week, Manchester became the first European City to formally adopt a resolution supporting the pledge – our task now is to encourage Yorkshire towns and cities to follow suit.

With this in mind we’re organising some local meetings of CND supporters, the meetings booked so far are:

  • Sheffield – 14 January, 7pm, Room 3, Central United Reformed Church, 60 Norfolk St.
  • Bradford – 16 January, 7pm in Bradford Deaf Centre, 25 Hallfield Rd.

We’ll be organising more local meetings shortly, so please do get in touch if you can help, likely next targets are Leeds, York and Hull – but will work anywhere members are interested in campaigning or where we can find sympathetic Councillors.
