Defend The Right To Protest

From the Thatcher government assault on miners at Orgreave to the current government’s bans and attacks on juries and anti-genocide activists being denied bail and a fair trial, our right to protest is under attack.

Unite Community Leeds, Wakefield and York have direct experience of how an increasingly authoritarian approach by governments has curtailed our right to free speech. Our members have been arrested as “terrorists” and when resisting the far right on our streets. As active trade unionists who are often campaigning on the street we know how important it is to resist. While some restrictions on Trade Union rights have been eased, many still remain. Our union was fined £265,000 in March for breaching a High Court injunction during the Birmingham bin strike. We cannot allow this to continue, this strike was about workers protecting pay, jobs and conditions. Come along and hear about what is happening and what you can do to help resist.
