A Future Beyond Military Bases (YEF26)

7 October @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Join us for a panel discussion on a future beyond military bases.

Points for conversation will include repurposing land used by the military for public parkland (as was seen with Greenham Common). This event will include Sue Say (a Greenham Common peace activist, as seen on the documentary ‘Gentle, Angry Women’), Richard Reeve (Rethinking Security) and Pinelopi Gardika who brings expertise in the future of bases outside the UK (from the Transition Security Project).

BIO

Pinelopi Gardika

Pinelopi is an architect and researcher whose work examines the relationships between securitisation, urban segregation and the built environment. Her work spans architectural research, spatial design and critical publishing projects. She is a graduate of the Centre for Research Architecture and has previously collaborated with Forensic Architecture (London), the creative platform bladr (Copenhagen) and the design collective K41. She is also the designer and publisher of The BREAK—DOWN.

Sue Say

On Sue’s first evening at Greenham she heard a woman talking to a soldier on the other side of the fence. It was that powerful conversation that kept her at Greenham, protesting nuclear missiles but also exploring the multitudes of different ways to be a woman by meeting and talking to “many shades of women”. Sue went to prison many times, took the government to court for illegal strip-searches and won, changing the law in the process.

Richard Reeve

Richard Reeve is the Coordinator of Rethinking Security, a network of UK-based NGOs, academics, practitioners and activists working to reframe UK security narratives and policy. He was previously Chief Executive of the think tank Oxford Research Group, and Head of Research at International Alert, Europe’s largest peacebuilding NGO. As a conflict researcher, he has also been a fellow of Chatham House Africa Programme and King’s College London’s War Studies department, an editor and analyst with Jane’s Information Group, and worked with the African Union, ECOWAS, and the OSCE.

This event forms part of York Environment Festival 2026.
