Bikes not Bombs Cycle Ride

OK, here's the plan...

Hurray for bikes! Hurray for Yorkshire! Come and join us as we celebrate the ‘Grand Depart’ in style. We’ve taken the slogan ‘be part of it’ literally and we’ll be doing our own cycle route from Leeds to Harrogate the day before Bradley and Co. start theirs, joining CAAB‘s ‘Recycle the Bases’ demonstration at Menwith Hill, then camping over for the night to watch the cycle pass the following day. Sound good?

We’ll be cycling from at a pace, not quite as fast as Bradley, but you will need to be relatively fit. As we can’t get the motorways blocked off for us, we’ll be using the sustrans cycle routes and be off road where possible, we’ll be taking lots of breaks to take in the scenery. If you want to get involved but don’t feel confident in a 30 mile cycle, join us in Harrogate for the Stage 2 cycle – a leisurely 7 mile cycle up to Menwith Hill, which should take us less than an hour. We’ll have a support vehicle and a bike mechanic on-hand should disaster strike!

Stage 1

Leeds to Harrogate

We’ll meet up in from of the art gallery on the Headrow in Leeds from 10.30 for coffee and cake. At 11.10 (exactly 24 hours before the Grand Depart) we set-off, following the cycle lanes out of the city at a steady pace, up through Roundhay Park and out on the Wyecliff way out of the city. Stopping for lunch by the river

4th of July Headrow, Leeds (in front of Art Gallery)

Meet 10.30AM for an 11.10 departure

Stage 2

Harrogate to RAF Menwith Hill

Just one stage a day? Not for us, after a quick refreshments stop at the Friends Meeting House in Harrogate, we’ll be cracking on and putting rubber to the tarmac in the direction of RAF Menwith Hill. We’ll be setting off from Station Approach so that we can gather people who are just coming for the second stage, we’ll meet at 4PM and set-off around half past after an opportunity for the press to get photos of us in our finery.
Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB) hold an annual ‘Independence from America’ day at Menwith Hill on the 4th of July, this year they’ll be joined by musicians such as Roy Bailey and Peace Artists and speakers such as Owen Jones
