Sheffield

Sheffield Creative Action for Peace (SCRAP) is an informal group that meets regularly to discuss issues relating to the arms trade and to develop ways of working creatively for peace. We first met as part of the ‘Wool against Weapons’ initiative to oppose continued and greater investment in nuclear weapons. We moved on to creating memory quilts to highlight the increasing military use of drones and to remember those killed by them, especially children in Gaza.

We have protested at Arms Fairs, at arms factories and at military bases, using street theatre, song, banners and washing lines of T-shirts.

We have made a pennant for every country that has ratified the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which we continue to add to. We hold a ceremony on Hiroshima or Nagasaki day each year, to which we invite the Lord Mayor as representative of the international network Mayors for Peace, to remember victims of the nuclear bombings and to draw attention to the need to work for nuclear disarmament. We continue to encourage councillors to sign the pledge in support of the TPNW, with the hope of getting the City Council to pass a resolution in support.
We mark International Conscientious Objectors’ day with a ceremony and lay wreaths of white poppies we have made on the cenotaph on both ICO Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Our ongoing project is the creation of a Cloak of Peace to which local people are warmly invited to add a patch.
