Under the currently proposed Us National Missile Defense programme

The Phased Array radar phyramid at Fylingdales, in the North Yorkshire National Park near Whitby, would be upgraded and a large new X-band radar system would be installed;

and Menwith Hill, near Harrogate in the North Yorkshire Dales, would be used as the European Ground Relay Station for the space Based infra Red system. Both of these facilities would be used by the Us to dect, track and target ballistic missiles in violation of the 1972 Anti Ballistic missiles Treaty, and in defiance of the 1966 outer space Treaty and the Non-Proliferation Treaty
