SUMMARY:Report Launch: FROM HARM TO JUSTICE: A Needs-Based Assessment of Nuclear-Affected Communities in Kazakhstan and Policy Pathways for Implementing Articles 6 and 7 of the TPNW
DESCRIPTION:In June 2026\, the Qazaq Nuclear Frontline Coalition (QNFC) published a policy paper “From Harm to Justice: A Needs-Based Assessment of Nuclear-Affected Communities in Kazakhstan and Policy Pathways for Implementing Articles 6 and 7 of the TPNW”. \n\n\n\nThis policy paper is shaped by lived experience\, community knowledge\, and a shared commitment to nuclear justice. It is not a conventional policy paper written solely from institutional or academic distance. Developed with care and responsibility towards every human being\, animal\, ecosystem\, and the Qazaq steppe that has endured the lasting scars of decades of nuclear detonations\, this paper is written with our land\, water\, collective wellbeing\, and future generations in mind. \n\n\n\nAuthored by Aigerim Seitenova and Yerdaulet Rakhmatulla\, co-founders of the Qazaq Nuclear Frontline Coalition (QNFC)\, the рaper examines the devastating humanitarian\, environmental\, and intergenerational consequences of Soviet nuclear detonations in Kazakhstan and explores pathways for implementing Articles 6 and 7 of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) on victim assistance and environmental remediation. \n\n\n\nDeveloped on a grassroots basis with limited resources and informed by nuclear-affected community – members from Semey (former Semipalatinsk) and Pavlodar\, this research deliberately departs from conventional models in which external institutions assume primary authorship and direction. The policy paper includes key findings on the needs of affected community members\, drawing on survey findings\, focus groups\, and interviews\, to identify persistent structural gaps relating to healthcare access\, compensation mechanisms\, disability recognition\, environmental remediation\, socio-economic insecurity\, and access to information. It also produces policy recommendations to advance policy proposals directed at the Government of Kazakhstan\, TPNW States Parties\, international organisations\, academia\, civil society organisations\, nuclear-affected communities\, nuclear-armed states\, and states relying on nuclear weapons within their security doctrines. \n\n\n\nThe recommendations seek to strengthen survivor-centred\, participatory\, and rights-based approaches to victim assistance and remediation efforts\, while supporting broader goals relating to accountability\, human security\, and the elimination of nuclear weapons. The event will also feature an opening video from Moruroa e Tatou\, marking the 60th anniversary of the first nuclear detonation in Mā’ohi Nui\, which took place on 2 July 1966.  \n\n\n\nDate: 2 July 2026 \n\n\n\nTime: 12:00–13:30 UTC | 5:00–6:30 PM Astana | 2:00–3:30 PM CEST | 8:00–9:30 AM EDST \n\n\n\nFind the meeting in your time zone here. \n\n\n\nOnline via Zoom \n\n\n\nRSVP to join the discussion  \n\n\n\nThe event is free and open to the public\, but please RSVP to confirm your attendance. Please note this is an online only event.

SUMMARY:Book launch: 'No To Nuclear' (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special book launch with author and founder of the US-based non-profit Beyond Nuclear\, Linda Pentz Gunter. \n\n\n\nLinda is visiting Leeds on her UK tour promoting her new book: ‘No To Nuclear. Why Nuclear Power Destroys Lives\, Derails Climate Progress and Provokes War’. \n\n\n\nNuclear power is everywhere in the news. We are told it’s needed to solve climate change\, to keep electricity bills down and to deliver jobs; even that it’s “green” and “homegrown” energy. Promoters claim the new reactors will be cheaper and safer\, and have solved the radioactive waste problem. But is any of this true? \n\n\n\nIn this new book\, published by Pluto Press in March 2026\, Linda Pentz Gunter debunks the nuclear myths. But she also puts the human face on the story\, looking at the negative impacts of nuclear power and nuclear weapons on human rights\, and the welfare of animals and nature…

SUMMARY:Threads - Leeds screening
DESCRIPTION:Young lovers Ruth and Jimmy decide to get married after Ruth unexpectedly gets pregnant. But their quiet lives in Sheffield\, England\, are threatened when the Soviet Union and United States go to war. After a nuclear attack destroys a NATO base 20 miles from Sheffield\, the town falls into chaos. Ruth and Jimmy are separated as the fallout spreads. Ruth must struggle to survive alone in the post-apocalyptic landscape. \n\n\n\nThreads is an important and understandably devastating response to the (nuclear) state of Britain in the 1980s. It is arguably the bleakest film ever to be broadcast on the BBC and remains as powerful and terrifying as ever. \n\n\n\nBleak Week: Cinema of Despair is presented in partnership with the American Cinematheque and Prince Charles Cinema.

DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a special evening at Showroom Workstation on Tuesday 2nd June at 6pm. \n\n\n\nSYNOPSIS \n\n\n\n“Alan Owen\, a descendant of an Atomic Soldier\, has fought tirelessly for the rights of those affected by Nuclear Weapons Testing around the world. Through global first hand accounts\, we follow Alan on his journey\, as he takes on the UK’s Ministry of Defence\, in a landmark legal battle that seeks recognition and compensation for millions.” \n\n\n\n\n“This outstanding film chronicles a decades-long campaign for the recognition of those who witnessed the first nuclear tests. Recognition must go beyond a medal\, it must include acceptance of the effects of radiation on them and their descendants. The work addressed in this film will\, in the end\, deliver what these people deserve: justice.” \n\n\n\n\n\nSir John Hayes\, CBE MP \n\n\n\n\n\n“Such a thought provoking story and so brilliantly told. If there’s one doc you watch this year\, I highly recommend you make it this!” \n\n\n\n\n\n“Astounding\, devastating\, so necessary. SUMMARY:‘No Nuclear War: Protest the expiry of New START’ – London demo outside US Embassy
DESCRIPTION:Join CND outside the Russian and US Embassies to urge these countries to extend the crucial nuclear treaty\, New START. On Thursday 21st May we will be protesting outside the US Embassy\, with a protest arranged for outside the Russian Embassy on Thursday 30th April. \n\n\n\nBetween them Russia and the US possess over 90% of the world’s nukes. New START\, which put limitations on US and Russian nuclear weapons\, expired on 5 February without a replacement in place. This is a serious and dangerous step backwards for global arms control – there is now no limits at all on the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals. Amidst all the nuclear dangers in the world right now\, we urge Russian President Putin and US President Trump to negotiate a new agreement\, rather than drive a new nuclear arms race which threatens us all. \n\n\n\nAssemble outside the US Embassy at 12 noon for a protest and rally. \n\n\n\nFor any queries please contact information@cnduk.org or phone the CND office on 020 7700 2393.

SUMMARY:From Bombs to Data Centres: the Face of Nuclear Colonialism (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Dive into hidden stories connecting the UK’s nuclear history and the tech powering our digital world. \n\n\n\nThe Western Shoshone are the indigenous population of the territory in Nevada occupied in the1950s by the US without Shoshone consent for a Nuclear Test Site. This site is where the UK tested (exploded) its Trident missile systems until as recently as 1991. To date\, no formal monitoring of human health has been conducted\, nor any tracking of impacts on local ecosystems. PM Zabarte has new information to share with the international community on the lingering presence of plutonium on Shoshone land\, and evidence of an historic cover-up of radioactive contamination from the test site. Moreover\, there are multinational consortia today proposing a vast nuclear waste dump\, lithium mines\, and nuclear-powered AI data centres on Shoshone and adjoining Native American territories. \n\n\n\nThe historic and contemporary exploitation of indigenous communities\, cultures\, and territories by imperial nations and extractive industries is increasingly a part of public discourse; however\, the story of modern-day nuclear colonialism by the UK upon the Western Shoshone Nation is almost unknown. \n\n\n\nGreenham to Nevada is raising awareness of #UKNuclearColonialism and its ecological and human impacts on the Western Shoshone Nation \n\n\n\nGreenham to Nevada supports independent\, participatory research into the effects of continuing nuclearisation of Western Shoshone and Native American lands \n\n\n\nGreenham to Nevada pursues UK accountability and grassroots solidarity with the Western Shoshone Nation

SUMMARY:‘No Nuclear War: Protest the expiry of New START’ – London demo outside Russian Embassy
DESCRIPTION:Join CND outside the Russian and US Embassies to urge these countries to extend the crucial nuclear treaty\, New START. On Thursday 30th April we will be protesting outside the Russian Embassy\, with a protest to follow outside the US Embassy on Thursday 21st May. \n\n\n\nAssemble outside the Russian Embassy at 12 noon for a protest and rally. \n\n\n\nFor any queries please contact information@cnduk.org or phone the CND office on 020 7700 2393.

SUMMARY:GDAMS action AT MENWITH HILL (Tuesday 28th april)
DESCRIPTION:Members of Yorkshire CND will be joining the weekly protest demonstration by the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign at the Menwith Hill US spy base on 28th April as part of the World Beyond War’s Global Days of Action on Military Spending (https://demilitarize.org/). \n\n\n\nThe protest starts at 6pm but some will arrive at 4pm for a walk around the base before that. \n\n\n\nGrowing world tensions and distrust show clearly that it is time to cut spending on the military not increase it. \n\n\n\nBefore things escalate into a global war – we must remember that in the nuclear age War will costs us the Earth.

SUMMARY:‘No War on Iran’ – demonstration at Fairford base
DESCRIPTION:Join CND\, Stop the War\, and Fairford Action for a demonstration against the use of UK bases in Trump’s disastrous war on Iran. \n\n\n\nAs the suffering in Iran and Lebanon continues\, the spotlight is on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to allow the US to use British bases\, including Fairford\, to launch attacks. \n\n\n\nRAF Fairford\, from which huge US bombers loaded with 2\,000lb bombs have been carrying out twice-daily bombing raids on Iran\, is central to the US illegal war. Despite government statements\, it can give no guarantee that these raids have not resulted in war crimes. \n\n\n\nJoin us in calling for an end to the war in Iran\, and for Starmer to stop Trump’s use of British bases. Given the fragility of the two-week ceasefire\, this protest couldn’t be more critical. \n\n\n\nAssemble 12 noon at Fairford. More details to be announced shortly. \n\n\n\nTransportLondon: book your ticket herePlease let us know by contacting information@cnduk.org if you are arranging transport from your area \n\n\n\nFor any queries please contact enquiries@cnduk.org or phone the CND office on 020 7700 2393.

SUMMARY:6 Decades Lecture: "Has That Peace Studies Problem Been Dealt With Yet?"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this thought-provoking panel discussion\, hosted by Professor Paul Rogers\, where leading experts will discuss the history of the School of Peace Studies and its role in understanding the conflicts and geopolitical tensions shaping the world today\, from Ukraine to the Middle East.  \n\n\n\nDate: Wednesday 15 April 2026 \n\n\n\nTime: 18:00 to 19:30 \n\n\n\nLocation: This is an in-person and online event. Norcroft Centre\, University of Bradford\, Richmond Rd\, Bradford BD7 1DP \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEvent description \n\n\n\nIn 1984\, former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher reportedly questioned whether the UK’s first School of Peace Studies was a serious academic institution or a potentially destabilising campaign group calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons\, asking: “Has that Peace Studies problem been dealt with yet?”.   \n\n\n\nSteeped in history and founded with support from figures including Harold Wilson\, J.B. Priestley and the Quakers\, Bradford’s Peace Studies department has gone on to help shape global thinking on conflict and security. Over the past five decades it has contributed expertise to the UK Government\, United Nations Peacekeeping and NATO\, and engaged directly with peacebuilding efforts in conflicts including Israel-Palestine\, the Balkans and Iraq.  \n\n\n\nAt a time of renewed geopolitical tensions\, protracted wars\, climate-related insecurity and deepening global divisions\, the work of Peace Studies is more vital now than ever in helping us understand and navigate what is happening\, possible next steps and what it means for communities locally and globally.
