The End of the Nuclear Age – Webinar

23 July @ 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm

Humanity has developed massively destructive weapons that threaten our survival. However, the world has agreed to make some of them illegal. Chemical and biological weapons have been outlawed through international Treaties – but one remains. Nuclear weapons have come to be seen as a symbol of political power and those countries who possess them have stubbornly refused to relinquish them and the awesome power to destroy the world. However, now, in 2020, we are on the brink of the adoption of an international treaty which at last aims to consign nuclear weapons to the rubbish bin of history.

Covid-19 has shown us that there are other threats that can topple our societies, that cannot be outlawed or easily controlled. The pause that this virus has forced on our way of life gives us an opportunity to rethink how the world move forward. An opportunity to build back differently, to move away from economies based on the exploitation of limited resources and achieving ever higher levels of industrial production and damage to the climate. A chance to move away from political systems based on nuclearisation, militarisation and perpetual war.

In this webinar, Alicia Sanders-Zakre (policy and research coordinator for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons), will outline how close we are to achieving a United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and Fabian Hamilton MP (Shadow Minister for Peace & Disarmament), will explore what steps we can take in the UK to ensure the success of the TPNW, and on initiatives such as the Green New Deal and Defence Diversification within the idea of building back better.
