Nuclear convoys – Pontefract public meeting
14th September 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Trident nuclear warheads and radioactive materials are frequently transported between MoD bases by road, often passing Pontefract on the A1. The equipment is transported in convoys of up to 20 vehicles.
The convoys are meant to be secret, and carry no warning symbols to alert first responders of the radioactive contents in the case of an accident. The local authorities and emergency services are not informed or warned before a convoy passes through.
Despite the supposed secrecy, the convoys are tracked on social media and photographed en route.
A 2014 MoD report revealed that, in preparedness exercises, responses to accidents were woefully inadequate. There have reportedly been 180 “safety incidents” with the convoys since 2000. A serious accident near Pontefract could have catastrophic implications for local people.
This meeting is being organised in conjuction with local residents, and is for anyone who is interested in, or would like to find out more about nuclear convoys. All are welcome, and refreshments will be provided.
