Dr Phil Webber, Chair of Scientists for Global Responsibility.

Phil has co-authored London After the Bomb, and Crisis Over Cruise. He was one of the organisers of the London Nuclear Warfare Tribunal (1983). More recently, he has contributed to or written many articles about the Trident nuclear system, Chernobyl, Zaporizhizhia, UK military strategy and the malign influence of corporations and the military upon science and technology.

Phil will discuss how the huge expenditures on bloated militaries are both a barrier to reducing climate damaging emissions and themselves create huge climate emissions and, in the nuclear case, ecocidal risk.

He will highlight how the fossil fuel and military industrial complexes are driven by similar corrupt forces inimical to our collective interests.

Ellie Kinney, campaigner on militarism and climate change with the Conflict and Environment Observatory.

Ellie is a campaigner on militarism and climate change with the Conflict and Environment Observatory, a Mytholmroyd-based charity which works to reduce the harm to people and ecosystems from armed conflicts and military activities. Her work focuses on the Military Emissions Gap project which advocates for greater accountability for the military’s contribution to the climate crisis.

Ellie will speak on the military’s contribution to the climate crisis, and how this is further exacerbated by armed conflicts. She will also discuss the role that COP28 (and future COPs) have to play in providing accountability for this impact.
