Delivering Disarmament and Peace: a joint seminar by Mayors for Peace and NFLA

23rd March 2018 @ 1:15 pm - 3:30 pm

The aim of the meeting will be to bring some of the key issues in the disarmament discussion to the fore, as well as considering ways local authorities can support the wider peace and justice agenda. It is also to help encourage attendance from Mayors / Provsts and councillors and engage them with NGO representatives, so it is a good opportunity for moving these issues forward.

Speakers  include:

Fabian Hamilton MP, Shadow Minister for Peace and Disarmament on the national debate on disarmament and ways forward.

Rebecca Johnson, ICAN Steering Committee member, on embedding the Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty at the global and national level.

Carolyn Leary, Programme Director, CREEST Sheffield, on how to promote conflict resolution and peer mentoring at the school / local level.

Sean Morris, NFLA / Mayors for Peace Chapter Secretary, European developments in Mayors for Peace and progress in the disarmament debate.

The meeting is being hosted by the Lord Mayor of Leeds and will be chaired by the Lord Mayor of Manchester. We also have the Deputy Lord Mayor of Sheffield and hope to have councillors from across the UK and Ireland at the meeting. We would love to see NGO reps and peace studies students attending this useful meeting.
