A fresh view on conflict: Logics of security versus the logics of peace at the example of the Korean conflict
Speaker: Dr Christine Schweitzer
Organiser: Dr Rachel Julian, Director of CeASR
In this presentation, the Korean conflict between North and South with its confrontation between world powers will be analyzed, using the template of “Logic of Peace”. This is a concept that has been developed by German peace researchers and practitioners to contrast the negative mainstream thinking about conflict – which looks at threats that need to be averted – with a “Logic of Peace”. “Logic of Peace” is about tackling problems and conflicts from a new perspective. Rather than considering solely the nuclear armament by North Korea as the problem, from the point of view of the Logic of Peace, the threat is a nuclear war and all parties to the conflict need to change their behaviour in order to prevent an escalation. This can be achieved by dialogue and conflict management.
Christine Schweitzer is Chair of War Resisters’ International, Coordinator of the Federation for Social Defence and Researcher with the Institute for Peace Work and Conflict Transformation (both Germany).
